Stepping into Sunken Harbor Club in Brooklyn feels like discovering a hidden shipwreck, except instead of treasure, you’ll find one of NYC’s most immersive tiki bars. This Brooklyn speakeasy blends nautical fantasy with expertly crafted cocktails, crave worthy food, and even a mesmerizing stained glass mermaid that anchors the entire experience. Is Sunken Harbor Club one of the best speakeasies in Brooklyn? From the ambiance to the drinks and food, here’s a full breakdown of what makes this hidden tiki bar stand out in NYC’s crowded nightlife scene.

Sunken Harbor Club Atmosphere: Inside Brooklyn’s Hidden Tiki Speakeasy

Tucked away in Downtown Brooklyn, Sunken Harbor Club sits just above the iconic Gage & Tollner a historic restaurant that has been operating for over 130 years. Due to its popularity it can sometimes be difficult to get into Sunken Harbor club, however even if your unable to get in dining downstairs at Gage & Tollner is hardly a consolation prize. The interiors exude old New York charm, with polished wood, vintage detailing, and a timeless elegance that makes the entire restaurant feel special. Luckily, I arrived early enough to beat the rush. By the time I left, a line had already formed outside showing how in demand this Brooklyn tiki speakeasy has become.

As you climb the narrow staircase, the sound of crashing waves begins to play, immediately immersing you in what feels like another world. It’s not hard to see why Sunken Harbor Club set social media buzzing, the attention to detail is impressive. The space is drenched in underwater elements from seaweed lined walls, fishing nets suspended overhead, and glowing jellyfish flickering softly in the corners. It’s easily one of the most intricately themed cocktail bars I’ve stepped into in NYC and the immersive setting makes ordering your first drink feel like part of the adventure.

Sunken Harbor Club Cocktails: What I Drank

The first cocktail I ordered was the Mai Tai. It was solid, though not quite on the level of the versions I’ve had in Hawaii where the drink tends to lean brighter, more rum forward, and deeply balanced. That said, my expectations may have been set unusually high given those comparisons.

The second drink I ordered was the PKNY, a non-alcoholic cocktail that ended up being the highlight of the night. Bright and refreshing, it balanced sweetness with just the right amount of sourness, finishing with a clean, tangy kick. Interestingly, it reminded me of the Poppy Hill mocktail at Coqodaq, similarly vibrant and thoughtfully composed. For a tiki bar known for cocktails, I was pleasantly surprised by this memorable mocktail.

Coconut, pineapple, and orange

The PKNY was so enjoyable that I decided to try another non-alcoholic option to close out the night. That drink was the Jubilee and unfortunately, it didn’t land the same way. I had expected a more balanced sweet and sour profile with pronounced cherry notes. Instead, the Jubilee leaned heavily being sour, with the tartness overpowering any sweetness that might have rounded it out. The result felt sharper than anticipated and slightly one dimensional compared to the thoughtfully composed PKNY.

Sunken Harbor Club Menu: Food & Small Plates

Now onto the food which exceeded my expectations. Given that the kitchen is powered by the team behind Gage & Tollner downstairs, I expected solid execution. What I didn’t anticipate was just how much thought and refinement would go into each dish served at Sunken Harbor Club. Every item felt intentional, balanced, and far more elevated than typical bar fare. Rather than functioning as an afterthought to the cocktails, the food held its own and in some cases, stole the spotlight.

I started with the Sunken Dumplings, which arrived juicy and well balanced, coated in a perfectly seasoned sauce that enhanced rather than overwhelmed the filling. The flavors felt cohesive and intentional, making this one of the stronger small plates on the menu. If you’re ordering food at Sunken Harbor Club, this is an easy choice.

Aged Beef, Jake’s Gouda

The G&T Sliders were my favorite dish of the night. Juicy and tender, each slider was topped with just the right amount of melted Gouda, adding richness without overpowering the meat. They struck the perfect balance of indulgent and refined. In hindsight, I wish I had ordered more because they ended up being the most memorable bite of the evening.

Sorbet: roasted pineapple

For dessert, I had my eye on what many consider one of the must-try’s on the menu the Miso Butterscotch Pudding. Unfortunately, it was sold out by the time I ordered. Instead, I opted for the Roasted Pineapple Ice Cream. It was well executed and pleasantly balanced, but I couldn’t help wondering what I had missed. I had been especially curious to see whether the pudding could compete with the Fries and Milkshake at Bar Orai.

The Takeaway: Is Sunken Harbor Club Brooklyn’s Best Speakeasy?

In my opinion, of all the bars I’ve visited in Brooklyn, Sunken Harbor Club currently stands as my favorite. While a couple of the cocktails fell short of expectations, the immersive decor and standout food more than made up for it. The cocktail menu is extensive, and with a bit more exploration, I’m confident there are even more drinks I’d enjoy much like the excellent PKNY. The food alone is reason enough to visit, and I’ll definitely be returning in hopes of finally trying the elusive Miso Butterscotch Pudding.

Tip: I recommend arriving about 15 minutes before the Sunken Harbor Club opens as the line ended up stretching out the door when I went. There is no way to make a reservation in advance, so it’s strictly first come, first served.
