Riding the subway during NYC’s sweltering summer heat (90+°) always leaves me craving something icy and refreshing. After spotting the menu for the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory online, I knew I had to try the many unique flavors they offer, including durian, red bean, black sesame, and more. Nestled in the vibrant heart of Chinatown on Bayard Street, this iconic dessert spot has been serving distinctive ice cream flavors for decades and is a go-to place for cooling off on an unbearably hot New York day. The ice cream here is so good that I’ve even found myself enjoying a scoop in the middle of winter.

Atmosphere at Chinatown Ice Cream Factory

Founded in 1978 by Philip Seid, the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory leans into its retro charm with a light yellow façade illuminated by playful neon signs. My favorite part of the décor is the ice cream eating dragon mascot that appears throughout the shop. Old newspaper clippings, scattered merchandise, and a handwritten ice cream board add a touch of chaotic grit that you won’t find at a typical ice cream parlor. The space itself is quite small and offers no seating, so expect long lines sometimes stretching out the door with customers enjoying their exotic scoops on the sidewalk outside.

Chinatown Ice Cream Factory Menu & Unique Flavors

With so many unique flavors to choose from, I found myself staring at the menu for over five minutes trying to decide. Luckily, the staff were very friendly and offered samples to help me narrow it down. The flavors I debated between included durian, lychee, black sesame, and ginger. Surprisingly, the ginger flavor ended up being the one I enjoyed the most. The menu also rotates seasonally, featuring special flavors like Green Tea Oreo, Lychee Rose, Buko Pandan, and many more creative combinations. If you’re curious about what might be available during your visit, you can check their full lineup online beforehand.

What I Ordered at Chinatown Ice Cream Factory

I ended up ordering taro and banana Oreo as separate scoops, along with a combined scoop of mango and banana. The taro flavor was a standout, truly fantastic. Even as someone who already loves taro desserts, I was impressed by how well balanced the flavor was. It had the mix of sweetness and creaminess that made each bite satisfying. The mango flavor was bright, refreshing, and delicious. The banana and banana Oreo were enjoyable, though I found them slightly less memorable. I also sampled the black sesame ice cream, which is definitely one I would order a full scoop of next time.
